Information I collect directly

This site does not require account creation and does not run a comment system. The only information collected directly is what you choose to send by email — for example, if you email me a correction or a question, I keep that email thread to respond to you and, where relevant, to improve the site.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, this site and its third-party partners automatically collect some technical information when you visit: your approximate location (from IP address), browser and device type, pages viewed, referring site, and similar log data. This is collected through the following categories of tool:

• Analytics — Google Analytics, to understand which pages are read and how the site is used.
• Session recording/heatmaps — Microsoft Clarity, to see how visitors interact with pages so I can fix confusing layouts or broken links.
• Display advertising — Mediavine and its advertising partners, described in detail below.

Advertising: Mediavine

This site has applied to join the Mediavine Publisher Network for display advertising but has not yet been approved, so no Mediavine advertising is currently running on this site. If and when that approval comes through, Mediavine would serve and manage advertising here, including third-party programmatic advertising, and may collect and use data as described in its privacy policy — including cookies, device identifiers, and similar technology to collect and store information about your use of this site and other sites, in order to provide relevant advertising. This section will be updated once advertising actually goes live.

Affiliate and referral partners

This site intends to join the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by linking to Amazon.com, but no Amazon affiliate links are live here yet. I also have not yet applied to any pay-per-call or quote-request ("free quote") partners. If either goes live in future: for Amazon, purchases made through a qualifying link would earn a commission; for a pay-per-call or quote partner, if you place a call or submit a request through such a link, that partner may collect the information you provide (such as a phone number or the details of your request) directly, under its own privacy policy, in order to fulfil that call or quote — I would not receive the content of those calls or forms beyond confirmation that a referral occurred. How information is used

Automatically collected data is used to understand site traffic and readership, diagnose technical problems, serve and measure advertising, and — for affiliate and referral links — to attribute a purchase, call, or quote request to this site so it can be compensated. I do not sell visitor data myself; third-party advertising partners may use data as described in their own policies linked above.

Your rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data held about you, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to data portability, subject to the exceptions provided by law. Your rights (CCPA / CPRA — California)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information is collected about you, to request deletion of that information, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, which for this site relates to advertising cookies and identifiers used by Mediavine and its partners. This site does not knowingly sell information about visitors under the age of 16.

Children's privacy

This site is not directed at children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through this site, contact me and I will delete it.

Data retention and security

Email correspondence is kept only as long as needed to resolve the matter it relates to. I take reasonable steps to protect information I control, but no method of transmission or storage over the internet is completely secure, and I cannot guarantee absolute security.
